Exchange City History

Exchange City is a new vision of teaching and learning about American enterprise and entrepreneurism. Created and operated by The Learning Exchange, it is both a hands-on learning lab site and a curriculum approach in the classroom and in the home. It helps to shape young people's attitudes about the opportunities and responsibilities of a citizen in the American free enterprise system.

Young people discover, investigate, and learn how to become productive citizens by working in a life-size replica of a city (8,300 - 10,000 square foot stage-set design). They operate the stores, bank, post office, radio station, snack shop, publishing shop, and city hall-all outfitted with modern office equipment and business supplies. They learn what it takes to create a business, supervise employees, and hold elected office, as well as personally earn and manage money.

The Learning Exchange has formed a partnership with JA to create Exchange City replications through the extensive and respected Junior Achievement sites across America.

Junior Achievement Inc.®

Junior Achievement Inc., whose mission is to ensure that every child in America has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system, is bringing the Exchange City program to communities nationwide. Together with The Learning Exchange, a Kansas City-based, not-for-profit education organization and the original creator of the Exchange City program, Junior Achievement is helping young people discover the opportunities and responsibilities of the American free enterprise system.

Since 1919, Junior Achievement has helped young people recognize how their talent, and the development and use of their abilities, can create better lives for themselves and those around them.

JA offers sequential and integrated business and economics curricula for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Independent studies prove that JA enriches the education experience and impacts the ever-changing needs of students.

The energy that brings business and economic theory to life is the volunteer dimension of the JA experience. This unique delivery system engages executives, small business owners, retirees, parents, and college students.

Through more than 168 domestic affiliates, JA reaches more than 3 million students each year in urban, suburban, and, rural areas. Junior Achievement International reaches more than one million students each year in over 100 countries.
