Preparing for an Exchange City Class
The foundation of the Exchange City program is Next Stop: Exchange City, a comprehensive teacher’s guide to introducing economics content, as well as practical skills needed for the program’s culminating activity–the operation of a city by students. The guide is intended to act as a starting point for teachers. Teachers are encouraged to develop learning activities and curriculum integration strategies that are reflective of their school environments.
Teacher’s Guide - Part One
The curriculum guide gives educators the basic economic and civic concepts that students will need to function in Exchange City. The guide includes numerous suggested class activities that can be used to introduce the economics and related concepts to fifth grade students.
Teacher’s Guide - Part Two
This part of the guide facilitates the teacher’s work in preparing students for the application of skills required of them in Exchange City. In this section, students have opportunities to apply and interview for jobs they will hold in Exchange City, work within their shop group to make key business decisions, and take the necessary steps to open for business on the day of their visit.
Citizens’ Practice Manual
Students each receive their own copies of the Citizens’ Practice Manual, which serves as an activity guide for their Exchange City preparation. Included in this manual are the practice materials and planning materials for students that correspond with the classroom activities. Each student receives two checkbooks, one for practicing check writing and another to use on the day of the Exchange City visit.
Instructional Aids
Oversize checks, deposit slips, checkbook registers, and loan payment coupons are included in the Exchange City materials. These materials may be laminated and used to demonstrate financial management tools.
